The Big Mo

I was reading in my journal this morning and today is the anniversary date of Harrah Christian School’s first day of class.  The following is an excerpt from 09-02-08:

“I am thankful that liftoff is talking place and the school is off the ground.  Flights require more force at the beginning of the journey than at any other time.  We have invested a lot of time, work, and emotional energy into this project.  My prayer is for God to bring it all together for His glory.”

Momentum is so important to an organization.  It is the hardest thing to achieve but once you get it, things get easier.  Getting a huge bolder to start moving may be difficult but once you get it moving it picks up speed as it travels down the mountain.  When you start something new whether it is a business, a church, a school, or a small group, momentum is your friend.  Once you get it established you must leverage it for all its worth.  Along the way you must make decisions to increase your momentum.  If you don’t you will certainly lose it.  Anything that you do to slow it down will cost you down the road.  For instance if your small group starts growing rapidly you are achieving momentum.  The reason it is growing is because people are finding community within your group.  If you don’t raise up a leader and let them take part of the group and continue momentum you will eventually lose it.  When it comes to momentum you either increase it or lose it.  There are no other options.  I am in the process of placing a new member on my team to continue the momentum of Harrah Church.  What are you doing to increase the momentum in the area you are leading?  If you are just starting something what are you doing to create momentum?

I agree with you on accepting the momentum as it comes, but you need to make sure it doesn’t get out of control. I have ran businesses for 16 years, and when you first open one you start out marginal, but as you grow you start the momentum you are referring to. But, if you let the momentum keep coming without putting some type of structure behind it you will eventually collapse. For example, as you build a structure or a team, most of the time that is used is in the planning. Once the planning is done you need ot make sure you have your foundation or core done. Once this is done you start going forward faster and faster, but you need to make sure you put in place pillars in that structure or team that will support that structure or team. In your case you are starting to gain momentum at the school which is great, and you doing the perfect thing by hiring that pillar to help support that momentum. Great Job!!! I personally always had to make sure my managers were high quality team members. Through the years of management, I always believed in the saying “You are only as good as your worse person”.
