Someone recently asked me if God would use a seer to guide them.  Here is my answer.

A seer is another word for prophet.  We no longer need a prophet because we have the revealed word of God.  The last prophets were the apostles and there is no need for them any longer.  The prophets were used to communicate God’s word to the people.  That is why we have the Old Testament prophets.  There were two tests of a prophet.  The first was that what he said was going to come to pass had to come to pass.  The second thing was the he could do the miraculous i.e. heal people, call down fire from heaven, walk on water, etc.  This is important because it is how the people knew they were hearing from a prophet of God because he could do things that normal humans couldn’t.  When the apostles performed miracles it authenticated their message as being from God therefore they could be trusted.  That is why all of the books of the Bible are tied to a prophet or apostle and why the early church did not recognize books that were not.   All you need to grow and develop in Christ is found in the Bible.  There are a lot of good people who believe some jacked up things and try to marry their subjective experience with Christianity.  If you are interested in thinking more about the spiritual realm buy The Screw Tape Letters by C.S. Lewis.  If someone says they want to prophesy over you ask them to do something cool like walk on water or raise someone from the dead.  If they can’t do it I wouldn’t give them the time of day!
