Home Based Ministry
Apollos was a spiritual giant in the early church. He was a first century Christian apologist that spoke with great fervor. The Greek word Luke chooses in Acts 18:25 is zeo—Apollos boiled hot for God. He was part of the upper crust of society. He received an education from the Greek University which was reserved for the elite. Most people would be intimidated by such a person. Acts 18:26 He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately. Priscilla and Aquila, a couple of blue collar tent makers, intentionally pour into his life and help him set the world on fire for Christ. Never underestimate your abilities! God can and will use you if you make yourself available. What would happen if we started using our homes to invite people in and explain the way of God more adequately?

I really love the story of Apollos. The other thing that you didn’t mention was that even though Apollos knew very little about the story of Jesus his zeal for that small portion was making an impact in the lives of those he was speaking to. Sometimes we feel that we have to have huge portions of the New Testament memorized or get to a point where we can quote the entire Sermon on the Mount or have a thorough knowledge of the Theology of the Bible before God can use us, but Apollos is a prime example of how God can use even the smallest truth in your life to change the lives of many people.
During my first years as a believer in college a family at the church that I was attending in Blanchard invited me to live with them for a summer. I learned more that summer about how the scriptures get lived out and expressed through the family than I ever have. That summer for me was one of my greatest growth moments. I lived with a family that modeled what a Christian home could be, I sat under the leadership of several great Christian leaders, and God showed me many amazing things.
