Spiritual Connection

Why do some people connect with God at a deeper level than others?  God does not show favoritism (Rom. 2:11) so the difference lies with us not God.  Some people are more sensitive to God’s activity in the world. They work hard at developing this spiritual  awareness and making it the most important thing in their lives.  People who are more connected to God are simply more receptive to God’s activity in the world.   We all desire to connect with the Divine—the secret to this connection is looking for and listening to God!

“My unassisted heart is barren clay,

That of its native self can nothing feed:

Of good and pious works Thou art the seed,

That quickens only where Thou sayest it may:

Unless Thou show to us Thine own true way

No man can find it:  Father!  Thou must lead.”

It is encouraging to know that we can all connect at a deeper level; not just some of us. What I find most challenging is carving out that time to develop that closer relationship with God. With my job and a 2 year old I often feel so tired and my brain doesn’t function well then. But the desire is there and I am hopeful that if I can spend even a small amount of time that God with faithfully draw close to me and reveal Himself to me.

Cain would disagree with Romans 2:11 :)

  3. Your remarks remind me of a qoute by Albert Schweitzer, as found iin The Spirit of the Disciplines by Dallas Willard:
“He comes to us as One unknown, without a name, as of old, by the lakeside, He came to those men who knew Him not. He speaks to us the same word: “Follow thou me!” and sets us to the tasks which He has to fulfill for our time. He commands. And to those who obey Him, whether they be wise or simple, He will reveal Himself in the toils, the conflicts, the sufferings which they shall pass through in His fellowship, and, as an ineffable mystery, they shall learn in their own experience Who He is.”

I was pretty casual about the spiritual disciplines for most of my walk with Christ until the last few years. I realized I needed to experience God at a much deeper level and wanted to have a relationship with Him like I had never had. So when I recommitted my life to the Lord – I did everything I could to keep the fire I had – and I have! I have dug into the Word, I pray constantly – and on my knees now, yet I only still did that one day a year fast with the church – until recently. I have decided to make fasting part of the disciplines I practice to go deeper and hear from God. I long to hear from Him and be closer to Him. So – fasting is now a part of my life -and it has changed me and my relationship with the Lord! A quote from the book I read on fasting recently: When you fast – it is a hunger strike against hell!
